His father unjustly discriminated against him by showing favor towards his brothers and kept him isolated on the back side of the desert, attending sheep. His great-great grandfather committed incest with his daughter-in law, Tamar, who portrayed herself as a prostitute. David's inherited instability continued into his adult life. He committed adultery and murder. Despite his gloomy history, David was a skilled warrior and musician, but most notable, he was a man after God's heart. How could such modest acclamation be given to someone with a deplorable history as David's? The answer lies in his passionate devotion to God. He knew how to approach God in humility and with sincerity in sharing the deepest sentiments of his heart. From this passion, he composed the psalms. David wrote many of the psalms. His poetic expressions are applicable for every situation or circumstance in life. Like David, when we fill our heart with praise, adoration, and thanksgiving to God, we gain strength to weather the billowing storms that beat against the soul. There is a Psalm for the Heart that lifts the weight of the burden of care.
