Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Progress of New York in a Century: 1776-1876, an Address Delivered Before the New York Historical Society, December 7, 1875

Besides these, there were billiard tables at de la Mon tagne's, in the fields, and near by Walker's Fives Alley, about the corner of Murray street, where Sir Henry Clinton was wont to play with his Officers. There was also a Fives alley in john street, near the theatre. In summer the ladies visited the tea-gardens, but then, as now, the men at times preferred to enjoy themselves without the restraining influence Of the fair sex.
