With the introduction of the Single European Market, it is intended that trade barriers between member states will be removed through the creation and implementation of a series of Community directives and the harmonization of the technical standards that support them. Electrical safety standards and regulations are a key element in this harmonization programme.;This conference was designed to provide an understanding of the principles of designing for safety and to put them into the context of the changes occurring in European legislation, in regulations, and in testing and certification.;The papers, given by an international team of speakers, were divided into four sessions. "Commercial and legal" covered - technical harmonization directives, specific directives including the Low Voltage Directive and design and commercial implications. "Standards" dealt with - product certification and the international standards-making process. "Safety and design and testing" described - the principles of designing for electrical safety, safety and design control, and finally, testing. "Certification and approval" discussed - procedures for certification and approval, certification in Europe, and the future of testing and certification in the open market.;A supplementary paper covered product safety assurance in the GEC Group. A list of abreviations, definitions of procedures and European fact sheets relating to the subject are provided together with an attendance list. The conference had the support of the Department of Trade and Industry.
