Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Convention to Secure the Religious Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, Held in Pittsburg, February 4, 5, 1874: With an Account of the Origin and Progress of the Movement

The con?ict between these two opposing theories of government has been fought heretofore on some local and special issue. The assailants have singled out some one particular Christian usage or law, and have been met at their own point Of attack. The importance of the relation Of the fundamental law Of the nation to the constantly renewed controversy, did not at first appear. But with the repeated renewal of con?icts over Sabbath laws, the Bible in the schools, the oath, days Of fasting and thanksgiving, chaplaincies, etc., the appeal to the written Constitution - the Compact of agreement between the Citizens of the nation - was sure, sooner or later, to be made.
