Publisher's Synopsis

Rose, an illegitimate child abandoned by her mother and brought up by a resentful aunt in an East End pub, joins the Women's Land Army when war breaks out. She looks forward to life in the country, where she can find the sense of belonging for which she yearns. But on her arrival at Peacock's Farm she is sadly disappointed; the farm is run down, its owner a bitter alcoholic who clearly resents her presence. Determined to make the best of things, Rose gradually convinces Bill Peacock that she can help to make the farm a profitable business again. But the future holds deceit and heartbreak and there are life-changing decisions for Rose to make before she can find true happiness.
