Excerpt from President's Address: The Etiology of Acute Lobar Pneumonia, Considered From a Bacteriological Point of View

Whether or not human beings who have recently recovered from an attack of pneumonia or in other ways have acquired immunity from the pneumococcus may yield serum of suffi ciently high immunizing power to exert a curative in?uence in human pneumonia, cannot at present be positively stated. Some observations indicate that the injection of serum Obtained under these circumstances may in?uence favorably the course Ofthe disease, but it does not appear that any such constant and specific therapeutic effects have been attained as to justify sanguine hopes that by this procedure with its present possibilities the treatment of pneumonia is to be revolutionized.
