Art. 1. Masonry, practically considered, is the art of shaping and uniting Stones for the various purposes of Building. It, therefore, includes the cutting or hewing of stones mto the particular forms required, and the union of them by level and perpendicular joints, con nected by the aid of cement, or by iron cramps and lead. The operations of Masonry require much practical dexterity, with some skill in Geometry and Mechanics.
