Publisher's Synopsis

Poundmaker is specifically written to meet the needs of adolescents and adults who are reluctant readers. The photographs, maps, and illustrations reflect the text, making the words easy to decode. This high-interest, low-vocabulary biography is ideal for English as a Second Language or adult basic education students.

Poundmaker (1842-1886) was a Plains Cree chief known as a peacemaker and defender of his people. He negotiated for his people when the Government of Canada wanted them to move to reserves. Poundmaker led his people in The Northwest Rebellion on 1885, always hoping for a peaceful way to save his people from starvation. He turned himself in to the authorities when the Rebellion ended and was found guilty of treason. He was let out of prison a year later and died soon after a broken man.
