Publisher's Synopsis
This book presents the first study of Caribbean migration to Britain which examines, in turn, the out migration from the Caribbean, settlement in Britain and the return element of the migration cycle. It emphasizes the interaction between macro-scale structural factors, such as changes in the British economy, with micro-scale forces such as the goals of individual migrants. The role of specific origins and destinations in the migration process is illustrated with a case study of migration from the Caribbean island of Nevis to the city of Leicester in England. - - Migrant social networks are a focal point in this book. They are shown to be a very important mechanism in the case of unrecruted labour migration. The social network serves as an organizing force for the migration and as a source of housing and employment information for new migrants at the destination. Networks also play a key role in sustaining the sending communities in the Caribbean.
