Es tanto el bienestar que nos produce contemplar aspectos benignos de la Naturaleza, que nos crea y nos abastece, que tendemos a olvidar que es una influencia implacable que avanza sin diseño ni fin, favoreciendo lo productivo y aniquilando lo desacertado a su paso. Cuando inspiramos profundamente ante un paisaje boscoso que, sin darnos cuenta de ello, nos habla de la presencia de agua y comida, no pensamos en la sangrienta lucha escondida tras su follaje. Cada especie fue engendrada por procesos naturales que, a través de un sinfín de pequeñas casualidades físicas y químicas, provocan cambios en el entorno atmosférico, geológico y biológico. Son estas fluctuaciones medioambientales las que ejercen de salvadores o verdugos insensibles, aleatoriamente, sobre el infinito número de alteraciones bioquímicas que han esculpido nuestros linajes desde hace millones de años. Nuestro planeta se formó hace cuatro mil quinientos millones de años y el primer microorganismo apareció algo menos de mil millones de años después, pero fueron necesarios otros tres mil quinientos millones de años de evolución para que el polvo de estrellas original adquiriese forma humana. La vida, nacida de una combinación de materia inerte, rayos solares y agua en los pantanos y lagunas prebióticos, siguió un curso ramificado en el que lo complejo predomina sobre lo sencillo, lo más eficaz sobre lo menos eficiente, hasta empezar a tener consciencia de sí misma. Todos los que estamos vivos hoy somos en cierto sentido campeones, porque los genes de cada linaje individual le han servido para llegar hasta el presente... eso sí, por pura coincidencia y sostenidos por un medio relativamente estable que ha permitido la adaptación; mientras una madre Naturaleza permanece indiferente ante el sufrimiento y muerte anunciada de cuantos habitamos en su seno. El comportamiento, ese amortiguador que facilita una interacción fluida con el entorno físico y social, se rige por mecanismos parecidos a los que moldean los cuerpos de los animales. Las conductas acertadas se conservan y se abandonan las que fracasan. Cuando todo funciona bien, el resultado es un repertorio acumulativo de reacciones cada vez más productivas. Heredamos un conjunto de predisposiciones instintivas que han salvado innumerables vidas de nuestros antepasados y que nos confieren nuestro temperamento en términos de sensibilidad y reactividad. La transformación que en ellas provocan nuestras vivencias cotidianas va configurando nuestro carácter, en función de la intensidad y frecuencia de las experiencias pertinentes. Hay, evidentemente, diferencias entre personas y, también, cambios individuales durante el transcurso de la vida. El primate humano es de una complejidad cerebral tan extraordinaria en comparación con los demás animales que es capaz de hacer abstracción de su más inmediato presente y viajar mentalmente hacia momentos y lugares distantes. Aunque su desarrollo no supone sorpresa alguna con respecto a las demás especies, el ser humano no solamente sabe aprender tareas complicadas de la experiencia ajena, sino que inventa y construye aparatos que posibilitan la extensión de sus propias capacidades corporales. Hace tan sólo doscientos mil años, nació nuestra especie en el Sur de África. Una fortuita modificación genética nos proporcionó un recubrimiento cerebral gris, llamado neocórtex, que nos otorgaba una capacidad única en la Naturaleza... la de pensar conscientemente
