It seems obvious, therefore, that accurate knowledge about the past is essential for any rational View of what constitutes the good society, and for any hope of progress toward that goal. Since every situation in the world today has somehow emerged from its antecedents, no world problem can be understood except in the context of its origin and development. If history throws no light on the pathway of the future, the human race is doomed indeed to walk in darkness.
