Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Pole Poppenspaler
In personal appearance Theodor Storm was a stately man, broad shouldered, erect, and tall. His massive head was covered with an abundance of light-brown, later snow-white hair; and his kind face enlivened by large, blue eyes, made such a deep impression, that once seen it could not easily be forgotten.
Although of high standing as a lyric poet, Storm is more widely known as the writer of short stories just fifty in number - the magic charm of which is due to sweetness of language, tenderness of sentiment, and an ever-present love of nature. Through most of them runs an undertone of sadness and melancholy, of lost hopes, and disappointed lives; reminiscence, frequently coupled with resignation and renunciation, being their keynote.
