Publisher's Synopsis
Polar Defender
Introduction---Polar DefenderA kingdom of ice lies beneath shimmering curtains of green and violet light at the pinnacle of the world, where night lasts months and the air tastes like peppermint. Aurora, a large polar bear, glows silver in moonbeams. Clear as glacier lakes, her sparkling blue eyes retain a tiny bit of ancient power. Tundra youngsters mutter, "There goes to Aurora, the Polar Defender," as they pass her snow-carved cave. Aurora is known for saving seal pups, steadying floating floes, and guiding migratory whales through maze-like passages. Aurora's heroic past doesn't prepare her for the imminent peril. Seals lounge on shiny decks, seagulls nest in protected fissures, and narwhals sharpen spiral tusks on clear icebergs each spring. These bergs are the Arctic's heart, yet the sun has is warm, harsh, and impatient recently. Noon light sizzles on ice; midnight darkness is uncomfortably warm. Old summer cracks now yawn in early spring. Elders worry that the blue-white world could collapse into an endless sea as meltwater rivers slither beneath once-solid sheets. Aurora listens to the wind outside her cave. In place of its customary joyful whistle, she hears a chorus of terrified voices: "Help us, Polar Defender!" Seals, walruses, and snow geese fear losing birthing areas, haul-outs, and nests before eggs hatch. Even tough human explorers who use firm ice roads for sled travel and study wonder how long they will persist. Aurora's heart beats ceremonially. In snowy-owl grandmothers' stories, the Source of the Sun, a subterranean room where primeval fire slumbers, is beyond jagged peaks. The blinding flames will quiet, and the world's balance will be restored if a pure spirit could reach that area, bring unification, and sing the correct chilly song. Aurora decides. She will travel to the world's most dangerous terrain with brave and timid partners. She braves swirling snow to temper the sun and saves a kingdom of ice, with paws planted and courage shining brighter than midday.
