Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Poetry and Fiction: Essays

Criticism, in whatever fancy dress, however, remains an art of opinion, and though the Opinion should be supported by evidence, even that relation is a questionable one. Criticism is not knowledge, but neither ought it to be mystique, even if the sources of our opinions, and the influence of fashion upon these, are mysterious subjects. Whether the writings in this book succeed as criticism is not for me to say, but perhaps it is fair for me to set forth briefly a few of the objects I tried to keep in mind.

Critical method. To try not to have one. Or to have, at the most, two simple precepts: read what is in the poem; do not read what is not in the poem.

To give evidence for assertions, so that the reader may have a way of knowing when his author has gone badly wrong.
