Poet, writer, artist and visionary, William Blake (1757-1827) is a well known and fitting subject. Dismissed by many during his lifetime as an eccentric, he professed himself a Christian and his visionary theology has since been recognised as highly prophetic, containing insights into both the spiritual and political issues of our times. He perceived that every person is divine and everything that lives is holy. And he believed that our behaviour towards other people, and also towards animals and plants, should reflect this spiritual reverence. indeed he is regarded by many as the inspiration for the green movement! His writings include essays on the underlying theology of politics and his lyrical poems, Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience.
