For this reafon I have determined to proceed in writ ing the lives of eminent men; and have compofed this tenth book containing the life of Pericles, and of Fabius Maximus who carried on the war againft Hannibal men who refembled each other in many virtues, but efpecially in the mildnefs and integrity of their difpofrtions; and who by hearing patiently the infolence and folly both of the common people and of their collegues in the govern ment, were eminently ferviceable to their country. With what fuccefs I execute my delign mufi be left to the judgment of, the reader.
