Publisher's Synopsis

The multi-part PLP Series contains a set of melodic patterns, licks and phrases that can be easily learned and incorporated into your musical vocabulary. Each title has a dozen or more ideas. Each is displayed in all 12 keys by letter-name for simplicity, and with musical notation in a selected key. The PLP series of ideas are crafted to help you incorporate simplicity, creative emotion and space in your musical vocabulary, while helping you to become more melodically innovative and expressive. If you listen closely to recordings of past and current masters of the Jazz language you will notice that the best of them fill the musical space with brief ideas and the creative use of silence. You will hear short statements, repeated motifs, octave variation, and more, as their means of creative expression. Lengthy phrases are part of the mix, of course, but the majority of their story telling is done with short colorful ideas. Too many notes strung together, without adequate silence, will muddy the musical water, just as too many spoken words, without a breath, will muddy a sentence. A sentence without a breath, tires both the speaker and the listener. Clarity of expression is not solely dependent on the quantity of words spoken, nor on the length of sentences we use. The most effective musical expression is often based on HOW we use our musical voice. Silence is like punctuation. You, and the music must 'breathe.'
