Publisher's Synopsis
This is a first-hand account of theatre in an apartheid society. Covering the first 10 years of the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, this book explores the forces which led to the foundation of the theatre and inspired the development of what is generally termed "New South African Theatre". Particular attention is paid to the financial backing by the South African business world, while the point of view of the black majority is also considered. Fuchs studies the influence of cultural boycotts and the problems of tours abroad; she includes specialist information not only on the Market Theatre but also on Black consciousness, and trade union and State-funded theatre in South Africa. The book concludes with an evaluation of the institution within the parameters of apartheid in South Africa today.
