This book outlines an approach to planning for local needs. It describes the work of an innovative three-year research project to develop the Tayside Profile for Dementia Planning, an instrument used to assess the needs of people with dementia. Most assessments of need are concerned with individuals; the Tayside Profile provides information about problems and services which can be used as a guide to planning for a population. The profile can be used by planners to identify needs for particular services, to identify needs which are unmet, and to see what effect different patterns of service will have. - - The book is intended mainly for planners and managers working with dementia in health and social services, though the method and approach should be useful to people planning for other dependent groups. It also contains some important insights about the circumstances of people with dementia, which make it of value more widely to people with an interest in social gerontology.
