In the past five years there has been a surge of activity in clinical PDT in Britain, largely centred around lung, oesophagus and skin cancers. However, work in many other cancers and non-cancerous lesions is in progress. The continuing experience of PDT should encourage clinicians to consider it as a therapeutic option in oncology.
