Publisher's Synopsis

Phormio is a play by the ancient Roman playwright Terence. It tells the story of a young Athenian named Antipho who falls in love with a woman named Phanium. However, Phanium is already engaged to another man, and Antipho's father, Chremes, is opposed to the match. Antipho and his friend Phormio, a clever lawyer, come up with a plan to win Phanium's hand in marriage. They convince Chremes to give Phanium to Antipho's friend, who is secretly in love with her, and then use Phormio's legal skills to get her back. Along the way, there are misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and plenty of comedic moments. Ultimately, Antipho and Phormio are successful in their plan and Antipho is able to marry the woman he loves. The play explores themes of love, family, and the power of cleverness and wit.THIS 34 PAGE ARTICLE WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE BOOK: The Chief European Dramatists: From Greece, Rome, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Denmark and Norway, by Terence .
