Two bodies are discovered in a remote part of the Pennines one cold spring morning. One is Detective Sergeant Phil Leech, the other an informant, Fiona Mitchell. Detective Constable Karen Sharpe should have been with them at their midnight rendezvous but she had been drowning her sorrows and had passed out at home. Detective Chief Superintendent John Munro asks her to join the investigating team, and she quickly realizes that this crime is about her.
