My warm thanks are due to all who have sent me the letters in their possession, and I only regret that I have not had space to insert, consistently with the scheme Of the book, many more of those that I have received. There could be no greater proof of the value set upon my father's letters by those to whom they were written than the immense number Of them which have been preserved. These letters ?owed from his pen without effort or premeditation, and are as natural and as intimate as his talk; their form is literary and poetical only because literature and poetry were part Of himself.
