Two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, American naval officer Preston Brown and his wife Elaine are caught in the path of the onrushing Japanese advance through the Pacific. With Preston taking to sea in the U.S.S. Houston, and Elaine remaining stranded in Australia, the young newlyweds must face the enemy without each other, their families, or the rest of the United States armed forces. Meanwhile, naval aviator Floyd Craven, a man from Elaine's past whom she would like to forget, fights his own frustration in the dismal early days of the war waiting for the United States to avenge Pearl Harbor.
