Miriam is a Christian during a time when the Romans are feeding Christians to the lions. She is brought up by the Essenes for her parents died before she was a year old. There, she hides from the Romans, learning what the Essenes taught her in language and in arts. It turns out that she has a great talent for sculpture. H. Rider Haggard was an English author known for his fantastic adventure stories as well as his sympathetic portrayal of native peoples. He is best known for creating the fictional character Allan Quartermain. A character that has been resurrected as a comic book hero in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Sean Connery played the role of Allan Quartermain in the film adaptation of the comic.
