Publisher's Synopsis
"Paulo the Brown Pelican" tells children and adults about a young brown pelican who lives in the paradise of Anastasia Island. Paulo loves to dive into the ocean for fish and fun and play with his friend Donna the Laughing Dolphin. Only brown pelicans dive from high in the sky and safely catch fish. When Paulo and his "squadron" of young pelicans win a flying contest, Scotty a jealous pelican challenges Paulo to attempt a dangerous flying trick. Paulo accepts the dare. Something goes wrong, and Paulo is badly hurt. Paulo is alone, disabled, and bitter, because he cannot fly anymore. Paulo meets Sara the Snowy Plover, a wise, kind, and compelling shore bird. Sara tells Paulo he can heal himself by helping other birds in the dunes who are starving. Paulo needs help to feed the starving birds who have been hurt by other animals and human litter. Scotty returns to atone for challenging Pete to the dangerous dare. Working together, Paulo and Scotty become friends as Paulo pursues his mission of kindness to the injured and hungry birds. Paulo overcome his disability and finds redemption through charity and friendship.
