Publisher's Synopsis
Rachel has just suffered two traumatic events in her life. One, she just broke up with her lover who happens to be her boss and a senior partner at the New York law firm where she works. Two, an old man who had been her neighbor and who she cared for very much was robbed and murdered while most of the building's residents were at work. And now, as a test of her endurance, she receives a phone call telling her that her grandfather was killed when his car ran off a West Virginia mountain. She's still struggling with the first two traumatic events and refuses to accept that her grandfather is really dead. She goes to West Virginia and has a meeting with Ben, her grandfather's lawyer. Ben is the handsome man she had been engaged to before she went to New York. As much as she and Ben are still attracted to each other, they are soon reminded of all the arguing that had caused them to break up years before. As she is trying to come to terms with her grandfather's death, she begins seeing him, always at night and always as he stands outside her bedroom window looking in at her. She soon comes to believe that she is succumbing to stress and is possibly losing her mind. Ben offers her comfort and safety and tries to convince her that she isn't crazy but that she is just overworked and overwrought. Soon, they succumb to their mutual attractions and grow closer. They work together to unravel what she thinks is the mystery of her grandfather's death but they soon become targets of both the state police and the Chicago mob.
