The subject of this volume is the place of mathematics and science in the thought of the medieval West, notably during the 10th?14th centuries. The 'quadrivium', part of the educational system of the Middle Ages, is discussed in the opening studies. These show how its original structure, and the division into the arts of arithmetic, music, geometry and astronomy, was reshaped, a process stimulated by the discovery of Arabic science and a new emphasis on the distinction between theoretical and practical learning. This theme, in the form of the relationship between theory and practice, is taken up again in the final articles. A further group of studies deals specifically with the development of arithmetic, looking in particular at the evolution and the use of numerals. - - Ce volume a pour sujet la place tenue par le mathématiques et la science dans la pensée du Moyen-Age occidental, notamment durant la période allant du 10e au 14e siècles. Le quadrivium, cette partie du système éducatif médiévale, est discute au cours de premières études. L'auteur y montre comment la structure initiale de celui-ci, qui consistait en la division des arts en arithmétique, musique, géométrie et astronomie, fut réorganisée; processus qui fut stimule par la découverte de la science arabe et un nouvel accent mis sur la distinction entre apprentissage théorique et pratique. Ce thème, sous la forme du rapport entre théorie et pratique, est repris dans les derniers articles. Est aussi inclus un groupe 'études traitant spécifiquement du développement de l'arithmétique et s'attardant tout particulièrement sur l'évolution et l'utilisation des nombres.
