The antiquity of the poem is satisfactorily proved by the multiplicity of those minute traits of language and manners, which must have been forgotten by a more recent writer. The author's mistakes in the general history of the period are not Of a nature to weaken his credi bility; and as Sir H. Nicolas justly observes, with reference to his speaking of Lord Stanley as Earl of Derby, though that nobleman did not possess the latter title when the events described took place, it was usual for early writers to allude to individuals by the designa tions borne by them at the time they wrote.
