Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from P. Vergili Maronis Aeneidos, Vol. 5
Vergil was fortunate in making a friend of Asinine Pollio, governor of Transpadane Gaul in 43 B. O., for when two years later he was ejected from his farm by one of the soldiers to whom a grant of land had been made, his powerful friend succeeded in conjunction with Gallus, another in?uential supporter, in restoring him to his paternal estate. In B. O. 40 he was again ejected. On this occasion he was presented with another estate by his powerful patron Maecenas.
In 37 B. C. Vergil published the Eclogues, a series of pastoral poems based upon the Idylls of Theocritus. Thanks to the friendship of the Emperor himself, he was enabled to pursue his poetic bent under genial in?uences. He spent his time alternately at Rome, Nola, and Naples, the last-named being his favourite abode owing to his weak health.
