Publisher's Synopsis

This volume is the first of three course books designed to meet the needs of today's medical students. It is no longer required and was never realistic to expect that preclinical students could absorb and retain a detailed knowledge of topographical anatomy. Specialized anatomical training is now recognized as a postgraduate course and is taken largely by trainee surgeons and radiologists.;Instead, the medical student needs a grounding in the basics of human anatomy thoroughly taught, so as to provide a basis for further study. This book teaches the student to observe in detail, and to record the structure and macroscopic functions of the living body. The majority of observations are made with the eye or the hand, complemented by modern imaging techniques, the study of prosections and a limited amount of dissection.;This volume covers the musculoskeletal system, the bones, musculature, blood supply and innervation of the upper and lower limbs and spinal column. The book is laid out in a modular format to allow easy adaptation to varied curricula, and it encourages examination and exploration of the living body - of more interest and clinical relevance than traditional approaches. The order in which topics are studied has been improved, and the content of seminars made more equal in terms of study time. This has involved moving material on the hand to an earlier position, and giving more time to the clinically important joints of the lower limb.
