Kate Ivory should be writing her latest novel, but her partner, John Kenrick, wants her to concentrate on their relationship. The last thing Kate needs is a cry for help from her friend, Sam Dolby. Blake Parker, director of an Oxford research unit, has financial worries. He and his team must produce useful results soon, or lose their funding. The last thing Blake needs is an attack on his lab by an animal rights group. Kate agrees to keep an eye on Sam's girlfriend Kerri, while he's away in China. Unfortunately, Kerri is working in Blake's lab, and the animal rights activists aren't alone in making life uncomfortable for the scientists. Kate finds herself entangled in a mystery where all is not what it seems...
