Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Out-Door Sports in Scotland: Deer Stalking, Grouse Shooting, Salmon Fishing, Golfing, Curling, &C.; With Notes on the Natural, Economic and Sporting History of the Animals of the Chase

It has been well said that Sir Walter Scott made Scotland, in the sense of picturing to far-off peoples its attractions of lake and stream, and its beauties of mountain and glen. The author of Waverley and Rob Roy so painted the picturesque features of his native land as to attract crowds of visitors from even distant parts of the globe; since the day the Lady of the Lake was published, tourists and travellers have come upon the scene, distributing their gold with an open hand. NO sooner had the poem been issued than the authorities of the Inland Revenue Department began to note a steady increase in the amount of the Post-horse Duty then demanded in Scotland.
