In contributions from more than 24 speakers, the present status of native Caledonian pinewoods is reviewed, management issues and practices discussed, and recent research and development is described. With a keynote address from Magnus Magnusson, KBE, the proceedings include papers on: the marketability of Scots pine timber from native pinewoods; people, enjoyment and pinewoods; implications of genetics research for pinewood conservation; pinewood restoration at the RSPB's Abernethy forest reserve; biodiversity and the ecology of pinewood plants and deer management and tree regeration in the RSPB reserve at Abernethy Forest.
