Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Our Lord's Parables: Lessons for the Instruction of Children in the Christian Life
IT is the belief of the writer, that a wrong is done to children when they are treated as incapable of grasping the great points of Spiritual doctrine revealed in the New Testament, and as if to be Christians were something that they must wait for, as an attain ment of later years. The main Object, therefore, has been to ap ply the practical doctrines of Christ, illustrated as they are with peculiar power in His Parables, - Repentance, Faith, Purity, Fidelity, Self-control, Truthfulness, Justice, Mercy, Devotion, Love, with all possible Simplicity, to the hearts of the young. Subordinate to this, the purpose has been twofold: first, to trans fer the learner into the scenes and customs amidst which these Parables were actually spoken by the Saviour; and secondly, to bring the sacred in?uence of the Parables into the familiar sphere where the scholars are daily living. On the one hand, it has been thus sought to throw light on the original force and meaning of these beautiful passages; and on the other, to se cure a direct application of them to present duties.
