The artist's fascination with astrology and magic, following a period of study in Paris, Antwerp and London, led him to associations with Aleister Crowley, D.H. Lawrence, for whom he created illustrations for 'Apocalypse', and Austin Osman Spare, with whom he produced and contributed to the journal 'Form', writing under the pseudonym 'Francis Marsden.' The image here, the central sapling set against a dark forest, with mountains and sky beyond, flanked by abundant trees and naked figures, is typically symbolic.
