Oriental Tales is the first of two volumes compiled from the well-known collection of stories found in the Arabian Nights. The title reveals the intention of the author clearly as the stories in this book are abridged with the intention of highlighting the underlying messages of morality present in them. The author has therefore taken pains to select only those stories which have a strong message attached to them. Since Arabian Nights itself is a fairly exhaustive work of literature, a book like this is very handy for a quick reading of some of its most famous stories.
There are a total of twelve different tales in Oriental Tales. Each of them retains the original essence of the plot with due weight given to the main characters and yet none of them run into more than a handful of pages. This is where the brilliance of the author shines through as the moral message and originality of these age old stories is retained even in brevity. Readers would be particularly pleased to find Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves as well as Sinbad featured in this volume.
