Publisher's Synopsis
McMurry's second edition continues to combine a modern coverage of organic chemistry, with an effective teaching format. It is presented in a clear way, with four-colour illustrations, computer generated drawings for accuracy, chapter summaries, reaction summaries, extensive problem sets, worked examples of problems, and a unique format for explaining reaction mechanisms. A dual functional group/reaction mechanism organizational format that emphasizes the mechanistic unity of reactions is used, with organic reactions classified into three fundamental types - polar, radical and pericyclic - and shows students how the reactions they study fit into this reactions-type framework. In this edition the acid-base sections have been expanded. There is increased coverage of isomerism and functional groups and a new chapter on stereochemistry of Alkanes and Cycloalkanes. There are numerous problems in each chapter, and more spectroscopy and worked examples. The appendices include the nomenclature of polyfunctional organic compounds. Glossaries, summaries of functional group preparations and reactions, reagents in organic chemistry and name reactions have all been moved from the Study Guide in;This book should be of interest to students in general chemistry, organic chemistry and general sciences.
