Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Order and Mission; A Limited Commission Essential to the Sacred Ministry: A Sermon, Preached at the Ordination Held by the Lord Bishop of Kildare, on the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels, 1837

We hear it commonly said at present, that every clergyman has, by virtue of his ordination alone, a right to preach the Gospel to every creature under heaven. He is the servant of Christ, called and sent by him, and, therefore, in the exercise of his ministry responsible to no earthly superior. The whole world is his parish, and, as far as he has access and opportunity, every human being on earth is committed to his care. I donot wish to misrepresent the opinions of any man living. I do not stand here this day as a controversialist or a partisan. The popular notion I believe to be as I have stated it; and, unless this were substantially the opinion at present maintained, the question of submission to authority would soon be at an end among all well-intentioned persons.
