Publisher's Synopsis
When John Butler's father leaves him nothing but a coffee plantation in Ceylon, he decides to sail there from Manchester in order to sign the deeds, sell the estate and pay off his gambling debts but, taunted by brutal plantation owner William Paget, John rashly decides to keep the estate and make a success of himself as a gentleman planter. Eventually his plantation begins to thrive and he falls in love with a local girl, but William Paget will stop at nothing to see him fail, and John is forced to risk everything he owns - and loves - on one last, epic gamble.
