Upon retirement from the Associational Office, Bill and Opal moved to the Friendship Commu nity where they still reside and enjoy visits from their many friends from all the churches of the Association. Bill's first post -retirement work came as pastor of Big Flatts Baptist Church. From there he went on to serve the Healing Springs Baptist Church, a special work of love be cause it took Bill back to his childhood neighborhood where he went to school and built so many early friendships as a student. Following the pastorate at Healing Springs, he went on to serve as pulpit supply for several churches and eventually returned to the church of his child hood, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. He served there as pastor until early 2003 and now again makes himself available to supply for churches without pastors. It is still common to hear that Bill is singing for funeral services and speaking at revival services. The churches of the Ashe Baptist Association have continued to Show their love and appreciation for this native son as he continues to stand in the gap for our Lord and Savior. Throughout his ministry Bill could al ways count on the steadfast love and support Of his wife, Opal. A quiet and gentle woman, Opal always made sure Bill was polished and pressed as he went about his work. She served faithfully alongside her husband and today enjoys visiting with Bill in the churches of the Asso ciation and renewing old acquaintances. Together, Bill and Opal, now have the Opportunity to enjoy their retirement years in anticipation of someday hearing the words, Well done, my good and faithful servants. Their attitude toward the people of the Ashe Baptist Association has been and continues to be one of gratitude. They appreciate all you have done for them. They welcome your calls and visits to their home in the Friendship Community. It seems only fitting that Bill and Opal would settle in a community that depicts what they feel for you and what they hope you feel for them: F riendslzig.
