Publisher's Synopsis
Alessandra Sanguinetti's project On the Sixth Day depicts the coexistence of people and animals on a farm in rural Argentina, studying their everyday relationships with each other and the land. In the fields, woodlands, and roadsides of Buenos Aires Province, Sanguinetti observes the rituals and traditions of local farmers whose lives interweave with a host of animals - rabbits, horses, pigs, geese, sheep, cows, chickens - within the cycle of life and death. The resulting series of vivid colour photographs portray with arresting honesty the realities of small and open land farming, which unlike intensive and factory farming reproduces a language of traditions and an intimacy of encounter that have persisted over the years. In images that at first might seem brutal, we witness the bond between man and beast as one raises the other for the ultimate sacrifice. First published in 2005 and now out of print, this new and expanded edition of On the Sixth Day includes additional unseen images.
