In 1939, bestselling novelist Louis Bromfield established Malabar Farm in southern Richland County, Ohio. At Malabar Farm he soon became an outspoken advocate for sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. Louis wrote and spoke extensively about his work on his farm, and by the late 1940s it was being called, "The most famous farm in America."
Louis Bromfield died in March of 1956. In 1972, the State of Ohio was given Malabar Farm, and in 1976, opened it as Malabar Farm State Park. On Green Hills and Valleys tells of the somewhat troubled years between 1956 and 1972, as friends and associates of Louis Bromfield struggled to keep Malabar Farm a going concern.
