Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Old Roads From the Heart of New York: Journeys Today by Ways of Yesterday, Within Thirty Miles Around the Battery
These chapters have attempted to follow ap proximately some of the most familiar of the old ferries and roads, although the new courses, for the most part, but roughly correspond to the ways of yesterday. Changes develop in the course of every road. No attempt has been made to trace the old routes of land and water travel precisely. But we may follow their general direction, and arrive at the same villages and other historic spots at which they arrived.
To the New York T imes I am indebted for permission to reprint those chapters which first appeared in that publication, having since been expanded and rearranged. Chapters I, XXII, and XXIII have never before b en published.
