Publisher's Synopsis

From a young age Dorothy Mitchell wanted to be a nurse and did everything she could to ensure that this was the career she followed. This memoir follows Dorothy's career in the 1950s and 1960s starting in Edinburgh and ending up in northern Rhodesia. This engaging autobiography is full of anecdotes and insights into the life of a trainee nurse and then an expat sister more than sixty years ago. Starting her career in a children's shelter in Edinburgh where she gained valuable work experience, she qualified as a Registered Sick Children's Nurse at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children before qualifying as a Registered General Nurse at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. She travelled to Northern Rhodesia in 1959 to get married and took up a post as ward sister. She left Rhodesia in 1962 with a new husband. In 2005 she was awarded the MBE for Services to the Community of East Lancashire.
