Publisher's Synopsis

James Laird was a Private First Class Radio Operator in the Marine Corps 6th Division during World War II. He tells the story of his personal, challenging, and sometimes frightening experiences as a Marine fighting in Okinawa from April to June, 1945. He was inspired to share these memoirs in honor of the 1st and 6th Division Marines who fought there in hopes that their story will not be forgotten. The battle for Okinawa was the largest amphibious landing with the highest casualties of any battle fought against the Japanese. The book includes the author's personal stories about the action at Sugar Loaf Hill, the Shuri Defense Line, Motobu Peninsula, Yontan Airfield, Oroku Peninsula, including help from the Battleship Mississippi. (This is the large print edition.)
