Publisher's Synopsis
Of The Epidemics is a medical treatise written by the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates. The book is a compilation of case studies and observations made by Hippocrates during the course of his medical practice. The treatise is divided into seven books, each of which deals with a different aspect of epidemics. The first book discusses the general principles of epidemic diseases, including their causes, symptoms, and treatment. The second and third books focus on specific epidemics that occurred in Greece during Hippocrates' time, including the plague of Athens and the epidemic that struck the island of Thasos. The fourth book is a collection of case studies that document the symptoms and treatment of individual patients with various diseases. The fifth and sixth books deal with the prevention and management of epidemics, including measures that can be taken to prevent the spread of disease and the importance of sanitation. The seventh and final book of the treatise is a collection of aphorisms, or short statements, that summarize Hippocrates' views on medicine and the nature of disease. The book is considered a foundational text in the history of medicine and is still studied by medical students and practitioners today.Case i.
