On sait que Voltaire en peignant son Pauvre diable avait devant les yeux un certain Siméon Valette, sur lequel on trouve une notice curieuse dans le Magasin encyclopédique de 1811 (1l, de mème l'original de la peinture de Diderot était bien réellement le neveu du célèbre auteur de Castor et Pollu.v à cet égard, le té moignage de Mercier, dans son Tableau de Paris ne laisse aucun doute.
