This volume brings together the expertise of Soviet and Canadian laboratories studying the physical and environmental challenges of exploitation of the last human frontier - the frozen wastes of the Arctic. Individual chapters explore in detail physiological, biochemical, psychological and medical adaptations to the stresses of this unusual environment, both during chamber simulations and during the course of an 1800 km 90-day ski trek between the northernmost settlements in the USSR and Canada.
