The concept, the average child, is indispensable, but 233mm every competent study of groups of children, at any age say, ten or twelve years - has proved that no one child is like another. Studies of weight, height, grip, of sense or gans, of mental functions, have revealed coincidences here and there but in every kind of valid test, physical or men tal, we have found with the age-averages also individual variations within each group. One of the most important tasks of educational science, when we view education as a process of adjustment of environment, and the individual 1n physical, mental, and social aspects, may be resolved, in the last analysis, into that of describing and explaining the na ture, significance and treatment of individual differences.
